30 Days...

...of music. Inspired by my Kate.

Day 1: Your favorite song
JUKEBOX by ANI DiFRANCO
FROM THE ALBUM UP UP UP UP UP UP

I heard this song for the first time when I was 18. I thought this song was written about me. I believed it with a passion only an 18 year old girl could muster.

5 things...

...I woke up to on my first day of vacation time:

1. Rain...finally

2. A drill, as someone drilled into my car and stole my catalytic converter.

3. Cash with one eye...the other is stuck shut and oozing green stuff.

4. Adele's Rolling in the Deep

5. And rain...did I already say rain?

Needless to say, I think I'll put off my cleaning extravaganza until tomorrow and today I'm gonna curl up on the couch with my one eyed dog and watch something that will make me laugh til I cry.

5 things about my Dad, Steve Apostle...

1. Today he is 64 years young. And if you know my Dad, you definitely know he gets younger at heart every year!

2. Tomorrow his first born will be 30 years old. Just today he told me, "I can't believe its been 30 years since I met the most important person in my life"--- hearing those words may have been the best birthday present ever.

3. My Dad, at 64, is still the authority on any and every new movie; that is as long as it is Action/Adventure, SciFi, or Comedy; he's not so much for the romantic movies...thank heavens.

4. When my sister and I were little, my Dad use to wake us up by sneaking in our room, grabbing our feet and shouting that the house was on fire. After a series of whining "DAD!!", he'd throw a pillow at us and say "Get up!" and then walk away laughing.

5. My Dad's Father came to this country from Greece. His birth name Apostolikis, changed to Apostle at Ellis Island. He met a woman named Nadine, whose family came from Ireland, and he married her. They lived in Kansas City, Kansas. My Grandpa, Gus, was a restaurant man. He ran his own restaurant and also provided meals for the prisoners of Leavenworth. I never had the privilege of meeting my Grandpa Gus, but I have a feeling I'm a lot like him.

Happy Birthday Dad

5 Signs...

...that it's summer in Waldo

1. Mosquito bites freckle my arms and legs.

2. The candles on the front porch are victim to hijacking by squirrels nightly.

3. 311 fills the house in the evenings.

4. Tyler is in heaven. Bring on the 110 heat index; He loves it!

5. Two showers a day still doesn't feel like enough.

5 random things...

...I bet you didn't know about me.

1. I miss pork like you wouldn't believe. It's just a matter of time before those damn carnitas do me in.

2. I freaking love me some classical piano. I can listen to Beethoven all day.

3. I haven't chewed gum in over a decade. People around me are constantly chewing gum. They all think I'm crazy because I don't chew gum.

4. I honestly have no idea if I want kids. I shouldn't be indifferent about this at my age. All of my friends have kids; all of them.

5. I miss land lines and loathe texting. The fact that I communicate largely by text message only makes me loathe it more.

5 firsts...

This week I will...

1. ...work my 1st 40 hour, salary paid, work week. Not bad considering I landed a full time job with spectacular benefits 1 week before graduation (toot-toot my own horn).

2. ...graduate from something for the 1st time. Yup, the 1st time...since 6th grade anyway...and I didn't work nearly as hard when I was eleven. I worked my butt off for this one.

3. ...go to work at 8am for the 1st time in my life. This is actually kinda sad...I'll be 30 this year and I've never started my work-day before 9:30am.

4. ...see my brother for the 1st time since his return home. BTDubbs, #1 & #2 woulda' never happened if it weren't for my brother. (Don't tell him I said woulda' and not would have, that might really bother him)

5. ...be surrounded by the people that I love, the people that make me who I am, the people who allow me to be who I am, and the ones who show me who I am. For the 1st time I think...

I will

be...here...now.

5 Reasons

5 Reasons to suspend your FACEBOOK account:

1. You discover how completely dysfunctional your family really is when you learn that yet another sibling has wed and not told you personally but waited for you to see it on facebook. (Notice I said another; this has happened before)

2. You actually doubt the validity of above facebook posting, not because it hinted at being nonsensical but because your sibling is crazy.

3. If you die tomorrow...people will check your facebook before they show your parents sympathy.

4. So much time spent looking at pictures of acquaintances of friends of relatives of vacations....do I need to continue?

5. Facebook addiction is worse than any substance addiction I can think of...except for maybe crack...people do awful things on crack.

October in Review

Murphy left Quivera Falls and moved on to the much bigger & much greener pastures of Loch Lloyd. The difference this has made for our family is tremendous---He is a much happier man.

Chili season began. YEA!!!! It's kinda my favorite thing to make :) And our chili bowls from Kate make it taste even better!

We saw Band of Horses. We have seen these guys open for other bands 3 times, but this show was our first with them headlining. It...was...awesome. Definitely my favorite band right now.

Our best buds, Pete & Mel, returned home from their travels in Thailand bearing gifts. Among them, hand-carved chopsticks to add to our collection (we also have hand-carved chopsticks from Japan thanks to Mike & Jess). Our friends are so cool.

Ole Hallows Eve was beautiful in Kansas City. This creepy crawler greeted Mama J on her porch Halloween morning! She immediately called me over to take pictures. We rounded out the evening with pumpkin carving & scary movies, and then I read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Pretty perfect Halloween if you ask me.

3. Peter & Mel, as they fly across the world to Thailand in search of adventure.

4. All the black stray cats....October has begun.

5. Tyler & Nikki, as they rap up life here in Kansas City to head out to the mountains.

Twins

I got to spend this glorious day in Kansas City with three really important people. My best bud, Brian, and his twins, Marlowe & Maverick.

1st Marlowe

And now Maverick

It was pretty cool to see Brian in 'dad' mode; something I haven't seen a lot of because I don't see them often. It was amazing to be witness to such unconditional love. Marlowe & Maverick are blessed to call Brian their Dad.

Thanks for the afternoon guys, Let's not wait so long for the next time ok?

You never know what the pantry might inspire...

Since I have been home more in the evenings (big blessings) I have been cooking dinner more (small blessings). I've been peering into my pantry on a much more frequent basis and there is some weird stuff in there for sure! I noticed an almost full bottle of rice vinegar the other day; probably purchased for some obscure failed recipe that called for an eighth of a teaspoon - I immediately felt bad for my husband since he most likely had to eat the outcome of said failed experiment.
I digress.
I set out on a mission to find a recipe that called for rice vinegar. A safe recipe that is...no need to go climbing Mt. Everest after falling down the back steps. I found this one and I must say it has become a staple at meal times at the Glannons. Thought I'd share it with ya:

Cucumber Salad (serves 4)
3 cups sliced & quartered cucumbers (about 2 med)
3 Tablespoons Rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoon sesame oil (dark if you can find it)
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoon chopped green onion
2 Tablespoon chopped peanuts

Combine first 5 ingredients in a bowl; toss to coat cucumber. Sprinkle with onions & peanuts before serving.
